Exercises

yaaaaaay

Congratulations, you have finished this chapter. Although there are still a lot of things to learn, you now have a brief knowledge about what is GNU/Linux. The best exercise right now is trying to install a GNU/Linux system anywhere. Using beginner friendly distros for your first experience is better as some distros might require more Linux knowledge to install and a different setup process might be demotivating for some people. Another option is installing GNU/Linux in a virtual machine, which is easier to do for less experienced people and things are less prone to go wrong as virtual machines aren't limited by the type of hardware that's on your hardware. Setting up a GNU/Linux system is the best thing you can do if you are going to start learning GNU/Linux, so choose a distribution of your choice and start installing it. Forums and search engines are the best helpers on your journey to install something.

Additional Tasks

  • In the history part the term Unics was mentioned with UNIX. You may want to research what is that and why it is like this.
  • There are a lot of distributions, you can compare their differences in a brief list.
  • You might want to read more about GNU as it has more than GNU/Linux, such as GNOME and GIMP.

These are here to deepen the knowledge and are completely optional. You are going to naturally learn more about them as you gain more experience.
